ABOUT

Who better to channel the gleaming, frosty beauty of Finland's most cherished composer, Jean Sibelius, than conductor Hannu Lintu, with celebrated Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi, who has dazzled audiences across the globe, brings warmth to this program with Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto.

  • Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi is praised across the world for his "Playful, assertive, intelligent music-making, with bone-china clarity" (The Times) and has been featured with the orchestras of New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland, Boston, and Chicago.

  • A noted interpreter of music from his native Finland, conductor Hannu Lintu has appeared in over 40 recordings, many of which feature music by his fellow countryman, Jean Sibelius.

  • Another Finn featured on this program is Kaija Saariaho, whose piece, "The Winter Sky" exemplifies her characteristically luxuriant and mysterious textures.

  • The second movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 has long been associated with the myth of Orpheus taming the Furies with the sweetness of his music.

  • Though a symphony traditionally has four movements, Sibelius's innovative Symphony No. 7 consists of only one intricately woven movement.
